SCARBOROUGH — At least 46 law enforcement officers from two-dozen agencies in Maine are attending the funeral of slain Officer Rafael Ramos in New York City.
Scarborough Police Sgt. John O’Malley, who organized transportation, says agencies represented include Auburn, Belfast, Ellsworth, Kittery, Portland, Scarborough, Waterville and Winslow police departments. He says the officers and a firefighter were taking a chartered bus to New York.
Ramos, whose son attends Maine’s Bowdoin College, was ambushed and shot to death along with Officer Wenjian Liu as they sat in their patrol car in Brooklyn on Dec. 20. The shooter killed himself.
O’Malley says the sole mission of the officers headed to New York on Saturday was to show respect for Ramos and to comfort his family and members of the NYPD.
