1915 – 2015

AUBURN — God received a very special angel on the night of Friday, Jan. 16: Priscilla Hayes, 99, passed away at Clover Manor in Auburn.

Born in Lewiston on Nov. 26, 1915, a daughter of Winworth T. and Alice (Payne) Warren, Priscilla was educated in Lewiston, graduating from Lewiston High School in 1933 and Bates College in 1937. She later attended Bliss Business College.

From 1939 to 1940, she was employed on the secretarial staff of the executive office of then-Gov. Lewis O. Barrows in the Augusta State House, following which she became secretary to the superintendent of the Central Maine General Hospital.

In 1942, she married Richard E. Hayes; he passed away in 1990. They lived in Liberal, Kan., during World War II, returning to Maine in 1945 to make their home in Auburn.

She was a former member of the United Baptist Church, the Woman’s Literary Union and the Auburn-Lewiston Art and Literature Club. She was an avid candlepin bowler and a crafter of beaded flowers and needlepoint, berry bowls, aprons and delicious chocolate cream pies for her family and friends, and for her clubs and church. She loved her time at Sebago Lake, riding in convertibles and hosting family celebrations in her home.

She is survived by four granddaughters, Amy, Jennifer and Mikala Hayes and Tammy Woodcock; two grandsons, Jeffrey C. and Austin Hayes; two great-grandsons, Steven Cornish and Ryan Woodcock; and her great-granddaughter, River. She is also survived by three special friends and personal angels, her former daughter-in-law, Linda Hayes, Linda Arris and Peg Hoffman, all whom were very devoted to Priscilla in recent years.

Besides her husband, she was predeceased by her sister, Ruth P. Warren, in 2009; her son, Jeffrey Hayes, in 2013; and her beloved boxer dog, Bonnie.
