RUMFORD — Black Mountain of Maine is hosting its annual Winterfest from Feb. 27 to March 1 to bring the community together, marketing director Deanna Kersey said Monday afternoon.

Kersey said the organizing committee is finalizing the schedule, with a majority of it finished.

“We’re always looking for things that families can do together,” Kersey said. “We try to figure out things that haven’t been done before, or haven’t been done in awhile, that encompass all ages.”

The Winterfest weekend will kick off Friday, Feb. 27, with $15 lift tickets from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and music in the Last Run Pub from 6 to 10 p.m.

Kersey said the annual torchlight parade, where a line of skiers toting torches ski downhill in tandem, will begin at 7:30 p.m.

On Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 28 and March 1, ski lift tickets will be $25.

Kersey said she expects sledding from 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday will be popular.

“The $3 sledding is a one-time fee,” Kersey said. “You pay the money and you can take as many rides as you want. Plus, the kids won’t have to climb the hill by themselves. They can take the ski lift to the top of the hill if they want.”

Another new addition to the Saturday festivities is the L.L. Bean Bootmobile, Kersey said.

“From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the L.L. Bean Bootmobile will be on site with games, prizes and giveaways,” she said. “That’s something new to the Winterfest weekend. We’ve had them on site for previous events, but not for Winterfest.”

A bonfire and barbecue lunch will be held at the summit from 11 a.m. until sell-out.

As part of Black Mountain’s Live Music Series, Nick Racioppi will perform from 2 to 5 p.m., followed by his full band, A Mighty Lion, from 6 to 9 p.m.

At 8 p.m., there will be a fireworks display while the live music is on.

Kersey said the major event Sunday is the Duct Tape Derby Cardboard Box Race.

“The whole idea of this is for people to make their own vessel, whether it’s a car, plane or boat, out of duct tape and a cardboard box,” she said. “There will be a registration table inside the lodge with more information on the day of the event. Basically, people will be trying to transport themselves down the hill with just a box and duct tape.”

Kersey said people can bring their own instruments to Black Mountain on Sunday for a jam session at the lodge.
