ROCKLAND — A 40-year-old Rockport man is being held at the Knox County Jail after police said he was driving drunk Friday evening, when he struck a pedestrian who later died.

Jeremy Stone is being held at the jail in Rockland on charges of felony operating under the influence, felony leaving the scene of an accident involving death and two outstanding warrants for unpaid fines out of Waldo County, according to Rockland police. Stone is expected to be charged with additional crimes, according to Rockland police.

The name of the victim is not yet being released, pending notification of family members.

The crash occurred shortly before 5:30 p.m. on Camden Street in Rockland, near Pizza Hut.

Witness Bradley Rackliff said he was looking at a pickup truck at Fuller Chevrolet-GMC Truck while waiting for his order at the adjacent Chinese restaurant when he heard a man and a woman talking across the street. He said he then heard a loud thud, like a car striking a big pothole.

Rackliff said he then heard the woman scream, saw the man land on the road and the driver of the vehicle continue.

The weather was rainy at the time. There is no sidewalk on that side of the street, but there is one on the other side that had been plowed.

The man was taken to Pen Bay Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Rockland police seized evidence at multiple locations and the Jeep Cherokee driven by Stone, according to police.

Rockport police and Maine State Police assisted in the investigation.

Bail was set at $11,000 cash. If he does not make bail, Stone would make his initial court appearance Monday afternoon in Rockland District Court.
