HANCOCK — Six local people suffered minor injuries in a two-vehicle collision caused by black ice on a hilly section Route 1 on Sunday, a state police officer said.

Pedro Paniagua, 54, of Millbridge, was headed south up a hill between No Frills Oil Co. and Merchant’s Auto Inc. around 1 p.m. when slippery conditions caused his Ford SUV to slide sideways, Trooper Bryan Creamer said.

At that time, George Newenham, 44, of Millbridge, had topped the hill and was heading north when his Ford Taurus started sliding. It hit the SUV almost directly in the center of the passenger’s side and both vehicles slid into a ditch, Creamer said.

Each vehicle was carrying five family members. Hancock and Sullivan firefighters had to cut Antonia Paniagua, 51, from the SUV, but the rest of the victims got out of the vehicles under their own power, Creamer said.

“She was in pain and they didn’t want to move her too much,” Creamer said of Paniagua on Sunday.

No injuries appeared to be life-threatening, but one or two of the six taken to Maine Coast Memorial Hospital in Ellsworth might be held overnight as a precaution, Creamer said.

No traffic citations will be issued. Neither vehicle appeared to be driving too fast for conditions, Creamer said.
