ANDOVER — The last week of snowfall has left the snowmobile trails of the Andover Snow Valley Sno-Goers club in good condition for its upcoming annual wind farm ride, President Richard Merrill said Friday morning.

The ride to Record Hill Wind Farm in Roxbury will begin at 10 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 15.

The storms have improved the trails “a great deal,” he said.

“Actually, the blizzard we had on Tuesday didn’t do a whole lot for the trails, since it was dry, fluffy snow,” Merrill said. “Luckily, the snow we’re getting today is a wet snow, which will make the grooming even better.”

Merrill said that since the club began holding wind farm rides three years ago, the number of participants has steadily grown.

“Last year, we had 45 sleds make the trip up to the towers,” Merrill said. “That’s a pretty good turnout. We’re hoping for a similar turnout, especially after all this snow we’ve had.”

Registration begins at 8 a.m. at the club headquarters off Route 5.

“It’s $10 if you register for the ride on the day of the event, and $8 if you register ahead of time,” Merrill said. “People who want to preregister just need to call me or anybody else with the Snow Valley Sno-Goers.”

Chili and hot dogs will be served at the clubhouse after the ride.

Merrill said an employee with the Record Hill Wind Farm will accompany the club to the towers.

“He goes with us so he can unlock the gate and allow us to go right next to the towers,” Merrill said.

The 22 wind turbines are on a ridge that stretches from Partridge Peak and Flathead Mountain, both in Roxbury, north to Record Hill in Byron.

For more information or to preregister, call Merrill at 392-3481.
