1928 – 2015

AUBURN — August Michael Berta, 86, passed away peacefully on Thursday, Feb. 12, surrounded by his loving family at the Hospice House, Auburn.

August was born April 6, 1928, in New York City, the son of the late Amerigo and Anna (Ruggiero) Berta. August was raised in Queens, N.Y. He graduated from Bayside High School, and while working full time, he attended and graduated from Pace University in New York City. He later attended a master’s of business administration program at St. John’s University in New York City.

August served in the U.S. Army Signal Corps from 1950 to 1952.

Following his military service, August began a very successful career in banking, working for Bayside Federal Savings in Queens, N.Y. He started out there as a staff accountant and worked his way up to become president of the bank. He later became the chief investment officer of New York and Suburban Federal Saving and Loan, and then moved to Maine to accept a position as president of Auburn Saving and Loan in Auburn, from which he retired in 2000.

August married his wife of 58 years, Janet S. Berta, on Nov. 20, 1954. They raised four children in the suburbs of New York City, providing them with a safe and loving home, great educations, and 45 consecutive summers at Bog Lake in Northfield.

August is survived by his four children, Robert Berta of Machias, Joan Casey and husband, Larry of Pittsfield, Victoria Ballou and husband, Edward, of Auburn and William Berta and wife, Daphne, of Auburn; grandchildren Erin Casey-Williams and husband, Jonas, Ryan Casey, Michael Casey, Alison Berta and Corinne Berta.

He was predeceased by his parents; wife; and sister, Theresa Serabella of Clearwater, Fla.

He will be deeply missed by all.
