LAGRANGE — Maine Attorney General Janet Mills has concluded that a state trooper who fired a fatal shot was doing so in defense of himself and other troopers when the victim pointed a weapon at them.
Mills released her conclusion Monday after an investigation into the killing of 49-year-old Lewis Conlogue of Lagrange in the parking lot of a closed restaurant on Aug. 3, 2014.
The report said Conlogue was suicidal, alternatively pointing a gun to his head and at officers who were called to the scene. State Police Sgt. Scott Hamilton fired the fatal shot when Conlogue pointed his gun at troopers who had no way of retreating.
The investigation focused on whether the facts supported Hamilton’s conclusion that lethal force was necessary for self-defense or the defense of others.
