WEST PARIS — The town is waiting to sign a new contract for hauling waste, after the company told officials it will start charging more per ton.

A representative of Pine Tree Waste in Mechanic Falls told selectmen last week that recent changes in the recycled commodities industry have seen a substantial drop in prices paid for them. The company is proposing billing the town and extra $15 per ton for waste it hauls.

The town budgets $47,600 annually for waste removal services, according Town Manager John White. It was not known how the fees would impact the budget.

White said it’s hard to say whether the fee will deter them from seeking a new contract. The current one expired in December, though they’ve been paying the company under the terms of the old agreement.

Only one other company, which is out of Portland, could provide waste disposal for the town, he said. It has not yet been asked to submit a bid.
