JAY — Every year GFWC/Maine holds an art contest for all high schools in the state that are sponsored by different women’s clubs. The state is divided into four districts. GFWC/Livermore Falls Women’s Club is in district 2.

Each year local students under the direction of Jan Barlow, art teacher, enter several pieces of art. These art pieces must be matted to be accepted by the state. The major drawback for Spruce Mountain High School was not owning a mat cutter. This was an expense the art department simply could not afford.

The women’s club designated the fall election bake sale for that purpose. Enough money was raised to pay for the cutter and a significant number of mats and other art materials.

The art contest for district 2 will be held in Skowhegan on April 18. Spruce Mountain students are already working on their entries. The winners from all districts will be judged again at the GFWC/Maine Spring Convention to be held in Auburn on May 7 and 8. Winners will be announced on May 8.

Last year, two local students won monetary prizes.

The fundraising committee wishes to thank all the bakers who helped to make the bake sale so successful and a big thanks to all the Livermore voters who supported the sale.
