SOUTH PORTLAND — The Leon A. Gorman Endowed Scholarship fund has been created by the families of Leon and Lisa Gorman to support Maine community college students who exemplify Leon Gorman’s long-standing commitment to community service and academic achievement.

The fund was established in honor of Leon Gorman’s 80th birthday by the couple’s children: Ainslie Boroff, Nancy Cohen, Shimon Cohen, Jeffrey Gorman, Jennifer Wilson and their spouses and children.

Leon Gorman is Chairman Emeritus of L.L.Bean, Inc. and served as the company’s president for more than three decades. A longtime supporter of Maine’s seven community colleges, he served on the 2006 Governor’s Community College Advisory Council.

In explaining his commitment to the state’s community colleges, Gorman has said, “I believe an investment in Maine’s community colleges is the single most important investment we can make in the economic and social well-being of Maine citizens. An investment today will pay dividends for generations to come.”
