ROCKLAND — Four juveniles, one as young as 11, were charged last week with alcohol possession after one of the youngsters’ grandmother came home and broke up a drinking party.

Two other juveniles had left the party before police arrived although one of those was later charged, according to Rockland police.

The incident was reported to police shortly before 10 p.m. April 1 when the grandmother arrived at her Broadway Place home and found juveniles drinking and intoxicated, according to Rockland Deputy Police Chief Christopher Young. The grandmother called the police.

Officers issued summonses for possession of alcohol by a minor to juveniles who are 15, 14, 13 and 11-years-old. The 11-year-old and a second 11-year-old who had left the party before police arrived were issued summonses for theft of alcohol from the Hannaford supermarket which is within walking distance from the residence.

The type of liquor stolen was not immediately available.

Juvenile Community Corrections Officer Linda Elliot said she has not yet seen the police reports but that the normal procedure for a juvenile who has no prior offenses is for her to file a request to divert the youngsters from the court system if they admit to the offense. Instead, the youngsters can be sent to an education program about the risks of drinking, required to perform public service or to undergo substance abuse counseling.

If the youngsters have prior offenses, they would likely have to go to court, she said.
