AUGUSTA (AP) — Maine students concerned about the impacts of climate change are urging the state’s leaders to take action.

Hundreds of Maine students are expected to participate in a march in Augusta on Saturday that organizers said will be the largest youth-led climate action in the state’s history. The event will begin on the steps of the Statehouse building.

Maine Students for Climate Justice is critical of Republican Gov. Paul LePage’s support for natural gas and doesn’t want the state to invest in any new fossil fuel infrastructure. The group said Maine needs to shift toward fossil-free energy policies.

Catherine Fletcher, a student at the University of Maine, said that young people will take action if leaders don’t because it’s their generation that will inherit the burden of the climate crisis.
