NEW GLOUCESTER — Selectmen on Thursday opened two bids for replacing Outlet Road Bridge at the northern end of Sabbathday Lake.
St. Laurent & Sons Excavation Inc. of Lewiston offered $159,721 to do the work and Glidden Excavating & Paving Inc. of Gorham offered $107,584.
Both bids will be reviewed by town staff and consulting engineer Will Haskell of Gorrill-Palmer Consulting Engineers Inc. of Gray before a contract is awarded at the May 18 selectmen meeting.
Haskell said the road will be closed for three weeks while the old bridge is taken out and the new one built. The work must be done during the low-flow season of July 15 to Sept. 30, according to the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife.
Haskell said tentative plans are to begin construction Aug. 15.
Town officials said they will work closely with local establishments, including the Outlet Beach recreation and concession business and Maschino & Sons Lumber Co., and neighborhood residents to minimize the impact of the closure. A detour route is planned.
Voters at Monday’s annual town meeting will be asked to approve $150,000 for the project; $106,830 from capital reserve and $43,170 from taxes.
