SPRUCE HEAD — A Warren man is free on bail after police say he forced his way into a Spruce Head home and ended up wrestling with the homeowner for control of a handgun.
Daryl S. Young, 38, was arrested April 30 and charged with criminal trespass, according to paperwork filed in Knox County Unified Court. He was released from the Knox County Jail in Rockland on $250 cash bail.
Officers arrived shortly before 6 a.m. April 26 to a report of a man trying to break into a home, according to an affidavit filed by Knox County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Arthur Smith. Thomaston police Sgt. Tim Hoppe had arrived moments before Smith and had Young in custody, Smith reported.
Young told police that he had been fleeing from people who had beat him up and threatened his life, according to the affidavit, and he claimed someone had jumped out of the trunk of his car and pointed a gun at him while another person beat him. Young was wet and suffering from hypothermia, according to the affidavit.
Smith said that Young appeared to be under the influence of something, although Young denied that.
The homeowner told police that he had been working at his computer when he heard someone outside yelling for help. When he went to the door, a man, later identified as Young, already was coming into the house, according to the affidavit. The homeowner said he kept trying to get the man out the door, but the man allegedly would not and there was a struggle. The homeowner told police that he called for his wife to get his gun, according to the affidavit.
The homeowner struck Young on the head with the gun, but Young was able to get the weapon from the resident and pointed it at him, according to Smith. The homeowner was able to get back the gun and ultimately was able to pin the man’s arm in between the door and doorframe until police arrived, according to Smith.
Young was taken to Pen Bay Medical Center in Rockport with pain to his head and arm. He was released from the hospital and charged four days later.
