BETHEL — Town Manager Christine Landes said Wednesday morning that tobacco-free zones will be established at several town recreation areas.

At Monday’s selectmen meeting, a resident asked if tobacco-free zones could be established in all town recreation areas, Landes said.

“The Conservation Committee came to me and suggested that we add tobacco-free zones to all recreational areas, but the selectmen said that ‘all recreational areas’ may be too hard to define,” Landes said. “I reached out to different recreation agents throughout the town to hear their recommendations, and of course, they’re all in support of it.”

The tobacco-free zones will include Angevine Park, Davis Park, Skateboard Park, Bethel Pathway and Mt. Will parking lot.

In other business, the board made no decision on a request for pavement at Skateboard Park. Landes said resident Dave Bean pointed out that there was a small patch of grass between the park and the Bethel Pathway that he wanted paved over.

“There were some concerns in the audience about safety, and about how there would be no buffer zone between the Skateboard Park and the Pathway,” Landes said. “The selectmen didn’t vote yes or no on the issue. They just told Dave that he would need to prove a little more why the patch of grass should be paved over.”
