FARMINGTON — Variety is the word that perhaps best describes what the customer will find when they walk into Mosher’s Meats and Seafood in Farmington.

“We carry a little bit of everything,” said owner Tawnya Clough. “People are surprised at the amount of produce we carry and they’re surprised at the amount of sandwiches we have as well.”

Steve and Peggy Mosher started the store in 1998, offering the highest quality meats and seafood to people from all over New England. Since then, it has expanded to offer a new fried seafood takeout stand and additional products.

Tawnya took over ownership in 2011. She begins the tour of Mosher’s by showing the mouth-watering meat selections. They hand cut their own steaks and pork chops and grind their own burgers.

“One of the things that we do better than a lot of the places around is we’re flexible,” said Tawnya. She pointed out that Mosher’s tries to accommodate customers in whatever way possible, such as cutting meats to a size the customer wants, and customizing its meat packages for customers.

There are also deli meats offered, as well as hot, sweet, and breakfast sausages.

“As we head into summer, we’ll have more grilling products,” said Tawnya.

Lobsters and clams are offered year-round, and Tawnya says she generally has at least three sizes of lobsters. Other seafood selections include haddock, salmon (both farm raised and wild-caught), oysters, mussels, and scallops.

If customers want Maine lobsters cooked to order, they can pick out their own and Mosher’s will cook them. They can then be enjoyed in Mosher’s picnic area. Customers preferring to order a lobster roll instead can get one, or Tawnya and her employees can make an assortment of sandwiches for large parties. People can also order baked beans and get a slice of cheese from Mosher’s large cheese wheel.

Food from Mosher’s freezer that’s available includes frozen shrimp, crab cakes, clam cakes, and cheesecake slices. Tawnya said she hoped to get a larger freezer later this spring to be able to offer even more products.

Cole slaw, potato salad, and macaroni salad are offered at Mosher’s, and are made right there at the store. Mosher’s also carries local farm eggs and Maine dairy butter.

Tawnya said that they try to get as much of their produce as possible from neighboring Sandy River Farms. In the summer, customers can get their own pick of farm-grown potatoes, tomatoes and cucumbers. In season, they carry corn on the cob and pumpkins.

There are many complimentary grocery items to choose from, not to mention sauces and rubs from Beast Feast, a Maine company.

Then there is the large selection of beers and wines. Mosher’s carries two large racks of wines, and also has chilled wines.

There is a take out window, which opens May 13, where customers can conveniently pick up their orders. The window is open from Wednesday through Sunday each week from 12-8 p.m. until around Labor Day.

Mosher’s is open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m.-7 p.m. and Sundays from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. The store is located on Route 2 (the Farmington Falls Road) as you drive from New Sharon or other towns into Farmington and is on a direct route to the Rangeley area and Sugarloaf region.
