NORWAY — Richard L. Wade, Petty Officer 3rd Class, was born in the town of Norway on Oct. 31, 1927, and graduated from Norway High School.

In May, 1951, he enlisted into the Navy during the Korean War and served in Newport, R.I., on the USS Snowden DE-246. He was assigned as a storekeeper on the ship. He earned the rank SK3 and also received the National Defense Service Ribbon and was honorably discharged on May 11, 1955.

He loved horse racing and worked for his father, who trained the horses. They enjoyed going to New York to race the horses and, in the winter time, they boarded them in Pinehurst, N.C. He worked one season with Stanley Dancer, the leading harness horse driver.

Wade worked at AC Lawrence as a supervisor and he also worked for Bancroft Contracting.

In 1953, he married Patricia Judkins and they have two girls. They also have four granddaughters and two great granddaughters.

Together, they did a lot of traveling and camping in their travel trailer. One of their trips was to California for five weeks. They also enjoyed going on cruises — they went to the Carribeans and Bermuda twice and have a lot of fond memories.

Richard came to the Maine Veterans’ Home in August 2013 and enjoys the music programs.
