SABATTUS — The Board of Selectmen on Tuesday evening announced an estimated tax rate of $18.14 per $1,000 of assessed property value, which includes approved municipal spending and estimated school spending for 2015-16.

The rate is 1.9 percent more than this fiscal year.

The school budget will be voted on in June.

Because voters at the May 14 annual town meeting rejected a proposal by selectmen to add a maintenance/public works/utility position, a maintenance employee will be trained to do stormwater management work. It includes gathering water samples, delivering them to the lab and completing the required safety and compliance paperwork. The person will also fill in at the transfer station and on the public works crew as needed.

In other business, Town Manager Andrew Gilmore will arrange a meeting of all parties regarding the Regional School Unit 4 lunch program to determine if it is running a deficit.

The town has been named a HeartSafe Community, an initiative by Maine Emergency Medical Services and the Maine Cardiovascular Health Council. The award recognizes the knowledge, efforts and diligence of EMS providers in Sabattus and their commitment to the health and safety of residents and visitors.

The board announced that police officer Dennis Mailman will graduate Friday, May 22, from the Maine Criminal Justice Academy in Vassalboro. He has been with the Sabattus Police Department for a year. Gilmore plans to attend the graduation.

Also Tuesday, a section of Route 126 from Lewiston to the bridge by Stevens Hardware Store is expected to be paved in July.

The Memorial Day parade planned for Monday, May 25, will begin at 11 a.m. at the Harry J. Conway American Legion Post 135, 40 Island Road. It will proceed down Main Street to Greene, Elm and Hemlock streets, ending at the Veterans Monument at Elm and Greene streets. Refreshments will be served at the Legion hall afterward.

In case of inclement weather, a ceremony will be held at the Sabattus Primary School gymnasium.
