MONMOUTH — The Monmouth Memorial Day observation will commence at 9:30 a.m. Monday, May 25, with a memorial service and ceremony at the North Monmouth War Monument beside the Mill Pond near the Tex-Tech Mill on North Main Street.

In past years a short parade was held in North Monmouth on Memorial Day, but this year the only parade will be held in the main village of Monmouth, to which all residents of North Monmouth and surrounding communities are welcome.

The community memorial parade will begin at 10:30 a.m. from Cumston Hall and proceed down Main Street to the museum, back to the Veteran’s Memorial Monument across from the police department where another ceremony featuring music from the Monmouth Academy band and local vocalists will be held.

Retired Navy Master Chief Maintenanceman Roger G. Line II will deliver a brief presentation and the American Legion Post 204 Firing Squad will fire a rifle volley salute followed by the traditional bugle rendition of “Echoing Taps” by a pair of Monmouth Academy musicians.

Prior to the day’s activities, the Monmouth Fire Department will host a breakfast from 7 to 9 a.m. at the Central Fire Station on Main Street to benefit volunteer firefighters who will participate in and who have been instrumental in organizing the parade.

The American Legion Post 204, along with the fire department, invite local civic organizations, groups or veterans who would like to take part in the parade to do so.
