CALAIS — Alana-Marie Pulkkinen of Monmouth was awarded Student of the Year at Washington County Community College. She was among seven Maine community college students who were honored for their academic success and campus and community involvement at a ceremony hosted by the Maine Community College System (MCCS) Board of Trustees.

Pulkkinen is heavily involved in the campus and Calais communities. In addition to successfully pursuing a double major in Adventure Recreation and Tourism and Criminal Justice, Alana is a member of the WCCC Student Senate and WCCC’s chapter of PTK National Honor Society. She also serves as a student ambassador hosting prospective students visiting the campus.

She works both part time in the administrative offices on campus, and off campus she works at the Calais Fire/EMS Department and at the Aroostook County Mental Health Center’s child treatment center.

Pulkkinen maintains Dean’s List status in academic studies and spends time volunteering, including for the Maine MS foundation and various fundraisers for the Calais Fire Association. Her professional goal is to become a Maine Game Warden. She intends to study at Unity College after completing programs at WCCC.

The award winners were selected by college faculty and staff. Each of the students will be awarded a John H. Lapoint, Jr. Leadership Award in the amount of $1,000.
