NORWAY — This weekend you can eat grilled fish freshly caught from Pennesseewassee Stream — if you catch one.

The second annual Family Fishing Festival gives children and their families a chance to catch newly stocked trout. It’s geared toward families with children younger than 16.

Last year, more than 70 children participated.

The festival will be held from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, May 30, at Butters Park at Main and Water streets. It is a collaboration among the Norway Recreation Department, the Mollyockett Chapter of Trout Unlimited and the Norway-Paris Fish and Game Association.

“We will clean and serve you your fish if that’s what you wish,” Norway-Paris Fish & Game Association President Sylvia Bosse said.

Association members will assist youngsters fishing. Each child will get a “law book” that Bosse said will detail what they can and cannot do while fishing on Pennesseewassee Stream, which flows from Lake Pennesseewassee.

Bosse said the association will have fishing poles for those who need them and will help educate children on all aspects of fishing.

Children can bring their fish to the Norway-Paris Fish & Game Association table where they will be traced on paper, weighed and measured. Volunteers will wrap the fish in foil, if children want to take them home, or they will be shown how to gut and grill fish so that they can eat them on site.

The event is held during Free Fishing Days in Maine on Saturday and Sunday, May 30 and 31. Any person in Maine, except those who have had their license suspended or revoked, may fish without a license, according to the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife.

Other groups, such as the Center for Ecology-Based Economy, Fare Share, Cafe Nomad and Ari’s Pizza & Subs, will be at the festival.

Water Street will be blocked to traffic during the festival.
