PORTLAND (AP) — Some residents are petitioning for a referendum that could overturn Portland City Council’s decision to grant a rezoning request for the redevelopment of 10 acres on the eastern waterfront.

The Portland Press Herald reported (http://bit.ly/1GYKona) the council voted to approve the request Tuesday morning following a public hearing and debate on amendments to limit potential redevelopment of the former Portland Company complex.

A spokeswoman for a group opposing the rezoning said Tuesday some members were displeased with the process and the lack of a compromise to retain views of the harbor. She says 70 people have signed a petition to put the issue up for a vote. A lawsuit is also possible.

Developer designs for the property include residential buildings, offices and a Faneuil Hall-style marketplace.
