DEAR SUN SPOTS: My daughter has a rocking chair that has been in the family for a long time, that is in need of re-caning. Is there someone in our area (Oxford or nearby) that does this kind of work any more? We have checked with other people around here, but have been unsuccessful in finding any one. Thank you. — Linda in Otisfield.

ANSWER: Sun Spots has answered this question occasionally over the years and today reached out to the people/businesses listed in an earlier column to see if they are still available to do chair caning. All said yes; here are three sources:

Bix Furniture Strippers, 357 Main St., Auburn, 207-783-3459, ask for Tom.

Pam Lanyon, Turner, 207-225-3174, CaningbyPam@gmail.com.

Georgia Tolman, New Sharon, 207-578-0348, ssrelacing@localnet.com.

DEAR SUN SPOTS:Where can I get a list of products that are tested on animals and also a list of products that are not tested on animals? — No Name, No Town.

ANSWER: Contact the National Anti-Vivisection Society, 53 West Jackson Blvd., Suite 1552, Chicago, IL 60604 or 1-800-888-6287. This is a nonprofit organization dedicated to abolishing the exploitation of animals used in research, education and product testing. The organization has a comprehensive reference guide to cruelty-free manufacturers of cosmetics, household and personal care products, and the brands available. It also lists companies that do test products or ingredients on animals. The guide is available as a smartphone app, it may be downloaded as a PDF at http://www.navs.org/file/Cruelty-Free-Shopping-Guide_201407.pdf or you can write or call and ask for a brochure to be sent to you.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: A number of years ago I clipped and saved a very delicious recipe for oil that is used on Italian sandwiches. Would it be possible for Sun Spots to locate this recipe and print it again? — No Name, Auburn.

ANSWER: The following recipe for the seasoned oil appeared in a Sun Spots column in 1994, a very long time ago indeed. Ingredients: 1 cup vegetable oil, 1/4 cup hot pepper juice (taken from jar of pepperoncini or other hot peppers in jars), 1 tablespoon garlic powder. Method: Combine all ingredients in container (squirt bottle). Shake well. Squirt or spoon oil on rolls when making the sandwiches. Store oil in refrigerator.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: Have you ever rented out your vacation home or cabin, or a room in your house, and it turned out all wrong? The renters trashed the place? Items found a way into someone’s suitcase? Renter’s left their pet behind? On the flip side, have you ever reserved what you thought would be an idyllic little haven advertised online only to find that when you arrived, the place wasn’t as advertised? The shower didn’t work? The dog next door barked all night? The place was infested with fleas? We’d like to hear about your rental stories for an upcoming feature in the Sun Journal. And if you have any tips on “vacation rental etiquette” throw those in, too. Reply directly to writer Karen Schneider at iwrite33@comcast.net.
