The Lewiston High School girls’ lacrosse team is hoping the third time is truly the charm.

As the Heal Points stopped spinning Friday and the brackets for this year’s Eastern Class A playoffs were etched in stone, the Blue Devils, the No. 4 seed in this year’s bracket, saw a familiar foe line up at No. 5 for a quarterfinal rematch: Windham High School.

The Devils and Eagles have met in each of the past two postseason tourneys, each time in the quarterfinals, and each time the Eagles have advanced. A year ago, Lewiston was the No. 6 seed and lost 6-5 at Windham. In 2013, the Eagles were the No. 6 and upended Lewiston at Bates College, 13-10.

The teams did not meet in the regular season, and only shared one mutual opponent — Edward Little High School of Auburn. Windham toppled the Red Eddies, 13-2, on May 16, while Lewiston defeated its cross-river rival 8-1 on May 8.

The Devils have won most of their games with stout defense, allowing a stingy 68 goals over 12 games, fewer than six per contest. The Eagles, by contrast, relied heavily on a potent offense. They netted 141 goals — including 39 in the final two games of the season — but allowed 101 on the other end.

The Eagles were also stalwarts at home, amassing a 5-1 record to just 2-4 away from the nest. Lewiston was also 5-1 home, the lone loss a season-ending overtime setback to top seed Messalonskee. That was also the Devils’ second game against Messalonskee to require overtime on the season. Whichever team wins in the Wednesday showdown in Lewiston will face the winner of Messalonskee-McAuley in the Eastern semifinals.

Not to be outdone, in what was supposed to be a building year, the Lewiston boys’ squad is also the home team in its own Eastern A quarterfinal. The No. 3 Blue Devils boys will host No. 6 Portland in the second half of a twin bill Wednesday at 7 p.m., following the girls’ 5 p.m. contest.

With a backbone of mostly sophomores and freshmen, the Devils won 10 of 12 games this season, losing only to juggernaut and top-seeded Brunswick, and to No. 2 seed Messalonskee. Lewiston also owns a win over Messalonskee.

“We took care of business on our own end, and whomever we draw in the first round, we draw,” Lewiston coach Ben Fournier said after the team’s last regular-season contest against St. Dominic Academy. “We’ll just try to play our game and give it our all.”

Portland finished 6-6 on the season to earn the No. 6 seed. The Bulldogs shared two common opponents with the Blue Devils. They defeated Massabesic 11-8 on May 29 (Lewiston topped the Mustangs 11-2 to open the season), and Portland handled Edward Little 9-4 on May 9, just two days after the Eddies lost to Lewiston, 7-4.

Lewiston has been predicated on patient offense and staunch defense this season. The Blue Devils have allowed only 51 goals through 12 games, barely more than four per contest, while scoring 97 (about eight per game).

The Bulldogs have allowed nine per game while scoring a shade fewer than seven in each contest.

Despite only five wins, the Oak Hill Raiders are back in the postseason, and carry a favorable No. 5 seed thanks in part to a victory over nine-win Winslow. But staring across the bracket is perennial contender North Yarmouth Academy. The No. 4 Panthers were uncustomarily kicked out of the playoffs a year ago in a loss to top-seeded Maranacook-Winthrop, and would like nothing more than another crack at the Hawks. To get that chance, they’ll have to defeat the visiting Raiders.

Oak Hill has allowed 114 goals this season, but 37 of those came in games against top-seeded Maranacook/Winthrop. Otherwise, the Raiders are allowing goals at 7.7 per game, while scoring 81 in those same 10 games. Oak Hill and NYA are slated to square off Wednesday at 3 p.m.

The Hawks, meanwhile, do not know their opponent yet. No. 9 St. Dominic Academy, which battled with Class A Lewiston in the season finale and gave the Devils all they could handle, will travel to No. 8 Morse on Monday in a preliminary round game. The Saints defeated the Shipbuilders, 8-7, in the teams’ lone meeting this season on May 11. Morse went 2-0 against common opponent Oak Hill this season, while the Raiders defeated the Saints in their one head-to-head encounter.

St. Dom’s and Morse also fared similarly in big losses to top seed Maranacook/Winthrop. They square off Monday at 5 p.m.
