State police identified the Fairfield man who was killed in a crash Saturday afternoon on the Maine Turnpike in New Gloucester.

Anthony Vandyck, 40, of Fairfield died at the scene, according a news release by Maine Department of Public Safety Spokesman Stephen McCausland.

Vandyck owned and was a passenger in the Land Rover that was driven by Derek Knowles, 35, of Skowhegan. Knowles had a suspended driver’s license because of multiple violations, McCausland wrote.

Knowles lost control of the SUV in the northbound lanes about 1 p.m., struck the guardrails in the median and overturned in an embankment, according to McCausland. Vandyck was not wearing his seat belt, was thrown out of the vehicle through the sunroof window and died at the scene, according to McCausland.

Knowles had minor injuries, was treated and released from the hospital, and arrested on outstanding warrants not related to the crash, according to McCausland. Knowles was taken to the Androscoggin County Jail in Auburn.
