TOWNSHIP D — Rescuers from the Maine Warden Service and River Valley fire departments Wednesday safely carried an injured Appalachian Trail hiker off Bemis Mountain to a waiting Med-Care Ambulance on the Bemis Track.

Four firefighters from Rumford assisted Mexico and Roxbury firefighters and a Med-Care crew who were sent to the 12:44 p.m. call for help from Bemis Track in northern Franklin County, northwest of Byron.

The extent of the injury and the status and name of the hiker were not available Wednesday evening.

At 2:45 p.m., wardens on scene asked for additional manpower for the carryout to meet at the intersection of the Bemis Track and the Appalachian Trail.

At 4:23 p.m., a dispatcher in Paris was advised by Mexico fire Chief Gary Wentzell that they got the hiker off the mountain and into an ambulance for transport to a hospital. Earlier, Wentzell said rescuers reached the injured hiker at 2:30 p.m. and had about half a mile to carry the hiker down to the Bemis Track.

The terrain is very rugged and steep as it drops off Bemis Mountain heading for the little valley that Bemis Stream flows through from Mooselookmeguntic Lake.
