A first-generation American, she took on responsibility early in life. At the tender age of 7, she was a translator for her Polish-speaking parents. Along with her husband, she ran West Surf Apartments in Old Orchard Beach and was the proprietor of Vi’s Gifts, Etc. on Old Orchard Street.

She was the first in her family to graduate college and was a member of Pi Beta Phi. She went on to obtain her master’s degree. Viola taught business skills at Glastonbury High School and Edward O. Smith High School in Connecticut and went on to teach at the University of Connecticut, where she met her husband, John. After her children were grown, she came out of retirement to teach at Lewiston High School.

Her passions included gardening, classical music, yard sales, playing the piano, shopping for finds at Mardens, and hoping to win Publishers Clearing House Sweepstakes. She was a published poet and author, and she gave of her time and talent to volunteer in the community. Viola was a shining presence in Old Orchard Beach and would often take a break from gardening to give dog biscuits to neighborhood canines on morning walks.

Her faith and her family were of paramount importance to her. She will long be remembered for her thoughtfulness and as a kind and sweet lady who made people smile.
