FARMINGTON — The new president of the Farmington Rotary Club says she is nervous but excited about the prospect of leading the local service organization for a year.
Martha Wing of Industry was recently named the club’s president and will serve until next June.
“It’s quite an undertaking, but I have lots of good people to work with, lots of good members,” she said.
She recalled her nine years in the club, and said a friend, Carolyn Eaton of Industry, introduced her to the Rotary.
“She invited me to a meeting,” Wing said. “What really got me hooked on Rotary was the Halloween window-painting.”
The annual window-painting for area children is one of many Rotary activities, Wing pointed out. There is also a Fourth of July Parade, basket beano, “The Price is Right,” the Festival of Trees, a wine-tasting event, a vidalia onion sale to benefit children in Guatemala and the annual yard sale.
Each year, the club gives three scholarships, two to Mt. Blue students and one to a Mt. Abram student.
“We’re thinking about having them do an essay,” Wing said.
Her goals for the club, she said, include more activity with EarlyAct, which involves Mallett School second- and third-graders; NextAct, third- and fourth-graders at Cascade Brook School; Impact, Mt. Blue Middle School students; Interact, Mt. Blue High School students; and Rotaract, University of Maine at Farmington students.
“I believe we’re the only club in the world that has all the different acts,” Wing said.
She is tax collector for Industry and has worked there for 30 years. She is originally from New Sharon and graduated from Mt. Blue in 1972 with Regional School Unit 9 Superintendent Thomas Ward.
Her hobbies are mainly centered around the three horses she owns.
“I like to sew when I get the time,” she added.
Wing has three children and four grandchildren.
