This is in response to the letter from Bob Pelletier (July 14) stating his belief that it is “time for change.” Pelletier suggests that all Lewiston councilors should be replaced.

I have served the constituents of Ward 6 for nearly six years. In that time, we have reduced our operating budget significantly. We have reduced our overall debt significantly and we have reduced staff. Not only have we reduced staff, but we have re-organized departments in an effort to be more efficient.

All of those changes were during the most difficult economic times this state has seen in decades and after the loss of millions of dollars in state revenue sharing and ever-increasing federal and state unfunded mandates.

Anyone who truly pays attention to local government knows that during the budget process each and every current councilor has tirelessly advocated for our property taxpayers; and, yet, we still found resources to invest for the future.

I agree, it is time for change, but not the type of change Pelletier suggests. What Lewiston needs is engaged community members who become part of the solution.

Vision and the courage to try new things is what will bring this city success in the 21st Century.

Mark Cayer, Lewiston, City Council president
