Pearl Richardson Smith

1927-2015

Pearl Richardson Smith, 87, went to be with her beloved Heavenly Father on July 13, 2015 at her home in Strong with her loving family holding her hands as she went to meet her beloved soul mate Curt. He predeceased her by only 54 days. Her family believes she died of a broken heart when her husband of 71 years left her. Now they are happily united again forever.

Pearl was born in Strong on Aug. 10, 1927 to Milford and Glennie (Brown) Richardson. She was the youngest of four children including Lloyd, Maxine and Virginia. They had a hard life while growing up during the Great Depression but remained close through their lives. All her family died young. Pearl said this caused her great pain, which she never got over. She felt blessed though with their children Gail, Butch (Wally), Lynette, and Sheralee (Sheddy) who she loved dearly. Pearl also enjoyed Curt’s family and dearly loved the nieces and nephews on the Smith side.

Pearl and Curt had many wonderful years together on Tory Hill in Phillips, Lower Main Street in Strong, and finally on Lambert Hill in Strong, “their farm,” where they lived for more than 51 years of their married life. Pearl, as a young bride, would hunt deer with Curt, usually holding the flashlight. They outsmarted them all.

Pearl was a strong loving and independent woman. She was the most wonderful cook, getting her skills from her mother. Pearl taught many children to cook. She wrote her own cookbook for the family. Her donuts, still to this day, could put Dunkin Donuts to shame. She sold baked goods at her grandson’s store and also cooked for her daughter’s nursing home business. Her apple pies were her most delicious and Curt could eat two pies a day when he was young.

Pearl also wrote a journal of her childhood. This journal has entertained her whole family with both laughter and tears. It has been a connection from generation to generation. Pearl had a great love and pride in her children. She was always there for them through all of their joys and heartaches.

Her children were Simone Bailey, Michaele Farnsworth, Sue Ellsworth, Daniel Enman, son in-law Perry Ellsworth, and daughter in-law Darlene Enman. Pearl was a very talented seamstress, making her girls dresses, gowns, and costumes for parades and horse shows. She also made beautiful quilts for all of her family and the most beautiful dolls imaginable. Her other hobbies included gardening, canning, bird watching, going on rides, and reading, especially her beloved Bible.

When her grandchildren began arriving, Pearl and Curt were thrilled. They were very involved grandparents. At times of difficulty, some of their granddaughters lived with them for periods of time. Their grandsons wore a path from their house to hers with so many daily visits. Grandchildren include; Jammie, Barbara, Randi, Troy, Leslie, Dani, Kirby, and Daron.

As her great grandchildren began arriving, she was getting older but she still was ready with an open door and something good to eat or sit with them on the porch while calling the hummingbirds to come visit. Great grandchildren are; Tyler, Shawntel, Deven, Sierra Pearl, Brooklyn, Dana, Kaitlyn, Dakota, Alora, Summer, Aspen and Chase. She loved each and every one deeply.

Pearl’s love, courage , strength, and wisdom will surround us forever as our mother, “Hon”, Nanny, Aunt and Friend. Our hearts and souls will forever love and miss her. We will all see her when our time comes.

Donations in Pearl’s memory may be made to the Food Pantry of the Salem Economic Ministry, 1458 Salem Rd., Salem Township, ME 04983.
