BRIDGTON — Gallery 302 announces Richard Allen of Sebago has joined its group of artists.

Allen’s work includes drawing and mixed media/collage pieces. After earning a bachelor of arts degree in history from the University of Vermont, he studied art at the Art Students League in New York. 

Allen has exhibited at shows in New England, most recently at the AVA Gallery in Lebanon, N.H. He has been in group shows at the Cambridge Art Association and New Hampshire Art Association.

His primary working method is mixed media/collage, using acrylic paint as an element in the finished work and as an adhesive to attach materials to the working surface. He works on three primary surfaces: paper, canvas and hardboard.

He is always on the lookout for materials that might enhance his work but used most frequently are graphics materials from magazines and advertising, recycled personal artwork and textured materials such as fabric, colored paper, vintage materials such as old postage stamps, natural materials such as sand and leaves, and drawing materials such as markers and pencils.

A strong need for order leads him to structure work on an underlying grid but at the same time, a desire to work insinctively in the manner of Abstract Expressionism leads to splashing and pouring paint onto the surface. He thinks of his work as being in a state of constant tension between order and chaos.
