GRAY — With temperatures expected to reach into the 90s Monday, the National Weather Service issued a hazardous weather outlook for western Maine.

With a mass of humid air moving into the area, the NWS predicts the heat index will reach 100 for parts of the day. Precautions are urged.

The NWS defines the heat index as a measure of how hot it really feels when the relative humidity is added to the actual air temperature.

For outdoors workers, NWS recommends:

• Drink water often
• Rest and cool down in the shade during breaks
• Gradually increase workload and allow more frequent breaks for new workers or workers who have been away for a week or more
• Know symptoms, prevention, and emergency response to prevent heat-related illness and death  
• Check weather forecasts ahead of time to be better prepared
