BERLIN, N.H. — In conjunction with the 100-year celebration of the Holy Resurrection Orthodox Church, Marina Forbes will offer “The Art of Icon Painting” workshop.
The hands-on studio workshop is for students interested in learning how to create traditional Russian icons, one of the world’s oldest and most respected forms of religious art.
The program will include a detailed discussion and demonstration of traditional materials and methods of icon making. Under the direction of the instructor, students will create their own icons using a combination of traditional and contemporary materials and methods.
Students will learn about board and painting surface preparation, gessoing, image rendering, pigments, brush strokes techniques, detailing, highlighting, gilding, Old Slavonic lettering and varnishing.
The workshop will be offered from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 10; 5 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 12; 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 13; and 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 17. It will be held at the Holy Resurrection Orthodox Church, 20 Petrograd St.
No painting experience is required for the class. Experienced artists will also feel comfortable in the class.
