NEW GLOUCESTER — Sabbathday Lake Shaker Village will offer a series of traditional craft workshops and educational nature walks Saturday, Sept. 19.

Traditional craft workshops include Exploring Digital Photography with New Gloucester photographer Vicki Lund. In this beginner’s class, participants will learn how to take great compositions while gaining confidence in using their digital cameras and basic Photoshop. Cost of the workshop is $30.

In the Shaker-Style Wooden Carrier workshop, internationally-known woodworker Chris Becksvoort will share his life-long expertise and techniques as a master cabinetmaker and scholar of Shaker furniture. Based on the original piece made by the Mount Lebanon Shakers around 1840, attendees will build a white pine Shaker carrier withe center handle and dove-tailed corners Cost to attend is $100.

In Wool Applique and Embroidery, local fiber artist Mary DeLano will teach participants how to applique and embroider a piece specifically designed for Shaker Village featuring a likeness of the historic 1794 Meeting House. Admission to the workshop is $65.

Participants in Natural Dyes for Wool will learn how to dye with plants from Marty Elkin of a Wrinkle in Thyme Farm’s dye garden and from plants that participants will gather at Shaker Village.

Resident naturalist Carolyn Fensore will lead Nature’s Outdoor Classroom, a 2½-hour hike through the Shakers’ 1,800 acres of diversified habitats while identifying and explaining flora, fauna, geological formations and Shaker history along the way. The cost of the hike is $8 for adults and $2 for children.

Visitors may stop by the the Shaker Store and the Shaker Museum Visitors’ Center, which feature a wide selection of old-fashioned gifts and high-quality local Maine crafts.
