UPDATE: Police identify driver of truck that hit, killed South Paris woman

TURNER — A South Paris woman died Saturday after she was struck by a truck on Buckfield Road, police said. The driver of the truck fled the scene and was still being sought Sunday evening.

Police said Brittany Stanhope, 21, was pronounced dead at the scene following the 8:50 p.m. crash.

Brittany and a friend were experiencing mechanical troubles with their vehicle, police said, and were parked in the breakdown lane on the north side of the road. Brittany had stepped out of her vehicle to get something from the back seat, police said, when she was struck by the truck.

The truck was heading west on Buckfield Road, towards Buckfield, and the driver did not stop, according to investigators from the Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Department.

From witnesses and evidence collected from the scene, police said, the truck is a dark-colored Ford pickup which should show front passenger-side damage.

Anyone with information on the identity of the driver or the truck is asked to call Deputy Randy Williams at the Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Department at 207-753-2599.

Maine State Police assisted in reconstructing the crash scene and Turner Fire & Rescue also responded and assisted with traffic. The portion of Buckfield Road between both ends of  Bennett Road was closed while the crash was investigated.
