1942 – 2015

EWISTON — Elaine Lois Estes Smith, 73, of Auburn, died Thursday, Sept. 10.

Elaine was born July 25, 1942, to Kenneth H. Estes Sr. and Esther Estes (Towle). She had many siblings, and was a graduate of Edward Little High School.

Elaine married Ralph E. Smith Jr. on Jan. 16, 1960. Together they had five children, Ronald, Kimberly, Kevin, Jay and Stacy. She was a loving, devoted mother and wife.

Elaine enjoyed summers spent with her family camping at Bear Mountain Village in Harrison, where she also volunteered as activity coordinator. She was involved in cub scouts as a den mother of Den 7, Pack 111.

In 1974, Elaine attended nursing school where she graduated valedictorian. She worked as a nurse for many nursing homes in the area until 1991 when she retired due to failing health.

She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Ralph of Auburn; her children, Ronald of Auburn, Kevin of Corbin, Ky., Stacy of Auburn; as well as many other family and friends.

She was predeceased by her parents; her son, Jay; and her daughter, Kimberly.

The family would like to thank the staff of d’Youville Pavillion 4 West and Hospice of Auburn for their care and compassion while caring for Elaine.
