LEWISTON — The Center for Wisdom’s Women has announced its October programming. The center will be closed Monday, Oct. 12, for Columbus Day.

Heart health: Cynthia Rice will provide information on heart attacks and strokes, including signs, symptoms and follow-up care, Thursday, Oct. 1.

Writing workshop: The writing workshop will meet regularly at 10 a.m. on Mondays starting Oct. 5.

Flu shots: Nursing students from the University of Southern Maine will provide free flu shots from 10 a.m. to noon Thursday, Oct. 8.

Peasant Pantry Cafe: Peasant Pantry Cafe will be held Thursday, Oct. 8. This month, the dish is Choucroute Garnie, an Alsatian meal consisting of sauerkraut with sausage and other salted meats and often potatoes. This meal is open to the public at no charge. Donations are welcome.

Access affordable health insurance: Lucy Bierne from Community Health Options will provide information on how to access affordable health insurance through the federal marketplace for women who don’t have MaineCare Wednesday, Oct. 14.

Reiki: Reiki is offered at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 27. Sign-ups are required for Reiki.

Regular end-of-month programs: Bingo is played at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 27. The Art Van will visit at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 28. The October birthday celebration will be at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 28. A clothing giveaway is set for Wednesday. Oct. 29.

All women are welcome, programs are offered for free, and no appointments are needed. Oatmeal breakfasts are available daily and the center has a shower available for use.

The center is seeking donations of hygiene items to give away, including full-size, unopened, basic items such as shampoo, conditioner, deodorant and lotion. Unopened smaller sample sizes will be accepted.

The center is also accepting volunteer applications for companions. The companion role requires women who have a professional background in social work, teaching, nursing, chaplaincy or another related field. The commitment is a half-day weekly. The center’s fall hours are from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Thursday and from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Fridays. A full calendar of events is available online.
