WILTON —  The Board of Selectpersons is expected to elect a new chairman Tuesday to succeed Paul Berkey Jr. who has resigned, Town Manager Rhonda Irish said.

The meeting begins at 7 p.m. Oct. 6, at the Wilton Town Office.

The resignation was unexpected and based on personal reasons, Irish said. Berkey was at the last board meeting, Sept. 15. He later sent a letter saying he was resigning and leaving the state Oct. 1. He indicated he was sorry for any inconvenience it caused because that was not his intent, she said.

Irish said the board has three options: hold an election in June 2016, hold an election Nov. 3, or hold a special election in January 2016.

The person elected would serve until June 2017, which was the end of Berkey’s term.

Berkey was elected in 2012 to fill a two-year term when Paul Gooch resigned and moved. Berkey was re-elected in 2014 and appointed chairman in June.
