JAY — A 17-year-old girl escaped injury Tuesday morning when the car she was driving went off Hyde Road, struck trees and landed on its side,  police Sgt. Russell Adams said.

Morgan Purington of Jay was on her way to Spruce Mountain High School when the accident occurred at about 7:28 a.m., Adams said. She was taken to a hospital by ambulance.

The car failed to negotiate a curve and Purington overcorrected the steering twice before the car went over an embankment into trees and flipped on its side, Adams said.

“Speed was a factor,” he said.

The 2003 Ford Focus was registered to her mother, Michelle Purington of Jay.

Jay firefighters assisted at the scene.
