1933 – 2015

RUMFORD — Rene Walter Bernard, 82, a resident of Harlow Hill in Mexico, died Friday, Oct. 9, at the Rumford Hospital.

He was born in Mexico on June 22, 1933, a son of Edmund and Mae (Fitzmorris) Bernard. He attended Mexico schools and served in the U.S. Army from 1951 to 1954. Rene worked in the warehouse for Hartley & Parker Liquor Distribution.

Rene was a communicant of the Parish of the Holy Savior St. Athanasius – St. John Church in Rumford. He was a member of Rumford Falls Aerie No. 1241, FOE, Napoleon Ouellette Post No. 24 American Legion and Robert Shand Post No. 1641, VFW.

He was married in Mexico on July 29, 1961, to Linda Gould, who died in Rumford on Oct. 28, 1999.

Survivors include a daughter, Teena Benson and husband, Lowell, of Mexico; and a son, Theodore Bernard and his wife, Treasa, of Silver Springs, Fla.; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren; a brother, Thomas Bernard of Mexico; and a sister, Ann Young of Virginia; his companion, Rena Fitzmorris of Mexico; and his best friend, Bob Bates of South Paris.

He was predeceased by six brothers, Ted, Edward, Frank, Roy, Steve, and Norman Bernard; two sisters, Pauline Esposito and Charlotte Allen.
