PORTLAND — A Maine father charged with killing his 3-month-old son wept during his initial court appearance.

Twenty-four-year-old Eugene “Charlie” Martineau appeared in court Monday before being returned to the jail, where he’s held on $150,000 bail. He’s expected to be back in court in December.

He’s charged in the death Leo Josephs, who was brought to Maine Medical Center Wednesday with numerous injuries. Martineau was arrested when the boy died Saturday.

Maine Department of Public Safety spokesman Stephen McCausland says Leo and his twin sister were born prematurely. His sister hasn’t been released from the hospital.

The boy’s mother, 21-year-old Julia Josephs, says Leo was a happy baby. An autopsy has been scheduled.
