LEWISTON — The Maine Drug Enforcement Agency has arrested two men on heroin charges following two suspected drug overdose deaths this past weekend in Androscoggin County.

Vincent Steed, 34, of Lewiston and Devin Webbert, 30, of the Bronx, N.Y., were each charged with aggravated trafficking in heroin and aggravated trafficking cocaine base.

According to a statement from Steve McCausland, spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety, MDEA agents and Lewiston police searched an apartment at 69 Lincoln St. Monday evening, as a result of the death investigations.

Seized were 53 packets of heroin, 72 bags of crack cocaine, scales, packaging materials and over $1,500 in suspected drug proceeds. The approximate street value of the seized drugs was $6,000.

Steed and Webbert, who were staying at the apartment, were arrested without incident and transported to the Androscoggin County Jail. The apartment’s renter was not present.

Bail was set at $50,000 each.

Steed was also charged with two outstanding arrest warrants for failing to pay fines from previous drug trafficking convictions. Both are expected to make their initial court appearance Wednesday in Lewiston District Court.

MDEA is continuing with the investigation to determine the sources of any suspected drugs that may have been involved in the two recent deaths.
