LISBON — The Town Council and residents applauded over 20 third- and fourth-grade peewee football players Tuesday night on their second Central Maine Football League state championship.

The team was an underdog at the beginning of the season, losing the first three games and scoring no touchdowns.

“No quit,” is the team’s motto, coach Chris Camp said.

“It was really cool when we won against Maranacook,” said Brady Keefe, who celebrated his ninth birthday last weekend. Keefe is the team’s center.

The Parks and Recreation seventh- and eighth-grade football team was also commended for winning the championship in its division. They were undefeated during the regular season.

“You all stepped up as a team,” Town Clerk Twila Lycette said.

Both teams were issued a proclamation to officially designate the events.

During the business portion of the meeting the council voted 7-0 to:

* Approve a request from the School Committee to spend $17,850 from the Capital Reserve account for a sidewalk to Philip W. Sugg Middle School.

* Accept a bid of $5.24 per yard for winter sand from Cox Enterprises.

* Accept a bid from Unitil Corp. for natural gas at 60 cents per unit.

* Approved bids from Pierce Manufacturing Inc. of Appleton, Wis., to refurbish Fire Engine 1 for up to $55,000 and Truck 6 for up to $79,600.

* Adopted the Emergency Operation Plan.

* Authorized spending for the roof project on the Town Hall. The project was to start this week, but was delayed because the wrong color roof material was delivered.

* Approved receiving funds from the Homeland Security Grant. Public Works will receive $1,077; the Police Department, $4,388; and the Fire Department, $1,120.

* Approved receiving a grant for bulletproof vests.

* Authorized the police chief to apply for a grant for K-9 vests and a grant for $6,337 for drunken-driving patrols.
