100 years ago, 1915
As a means of relieving Lisbon street from Main to Pine streets of the congestion of traffic, Mayor Brann announced Wednesday, a plan that he has started to put into effect. He would put Canal street into good condition as a thorofare, light the street with the kind of lamps used on Lisbon street, and believes this would attract many that way. Mayor Brann stated that he has talked with several treasurers of the mills and corporations that line the canal, and that they have said without a doubt they would finance the street light end of the plan. The mayor believes the city should gravel and oil Canal street next year. Traffic on Lisbon street, especially holidays and fair week, is difficult both for the police and the drivers of vehicles. The mayor believes that Canal street made attractive would help relieve the congestion.

50 years ago, 1965
As the result of a recent circulation contest sponsored by The Lewiston Daily Sun and Evening Journal, complete family Thanksgiving dinners were awarded Tuesday to 80 carriers. The Thanksgiving baskets included a 10-pound turkey, five pounds of Maine potatoes, two pounds of Maine carrots, two packages of frozen peas, a can of cranberry sauce, a can of pumpkin pie filling, a pound of mixed nuts, a pound of chocolates, and a dozen dinner rolls. The awards went to boys and girls who showed a net gain of seven or more customers on their routes.

25 years ago, 1990
Curbside recycling in Auburn could become a reality within the next six months as a regional effort to cut solid waste and quiet political pressure gets under way among city residents. Mid-Maine Waste Action Corp., the public firm building a $28 million trash incineration plant on Goldthwaite Road. plans to begin its recycling program among its 12 member towns in the spring, although not all municipalities will have curbside pickup.
