MEXICO — A local man who was injured when his vehicle hit a dead deer on Route 2 Monday night was in stable condition at a Lewiston hospital, Police Chief Roy Hodsdon said Wednesday.

Gerard Pelletier, 50, of Mexico was seriously injured when his vehicle struck the animal and overturned. A logging truck coming in the opposite direction swerved and avoided hitting Pelletier’s vehicle but lost its load of logs on the road, Hodsdon said. The logs rolled away from the overturned vehicle, he said.

The logging truck was driven by Bernard Roy, 31, of Passumpsic, Vt. He had minor injuries but was not hospitalized.

Hodsdon said Wednesday that Pelletier, who was transported to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston, was in “stable condition.”

“I’m not sure what the specifics are in terms of his injuries and where he is in the healing process, but I do know he’s doing better,” Hodsdon said.

Maine State Police and the Dixfield Police Department assisted with the investigation, and the Franklin County Sheriff’s Department helped with mapping and reconstructing the accident.

“There was a 150-foot section of road filled with debris from the vehicles, the deer and the logs,” Hodsdon said. “It was tough to work through.”
