Class AA comes to Maine high school basketball this winter, and the timing probably isn’t exquisite for the Lewiston boys.

The Blue Devils graduated their most successful senior class in more than two decades. Led by Isaiah Harris, now at Penn State on a track and field scholarship, Lewiston reached the regional final and threw a scare into eventual state champion Hampden.

Lewiston lists a substantial number of “returning” players, but few of them saw significant varsity minutes. Salat Hassan and Abdinasir Issack lead the way along with Tahj Fulgham, Jordan Palmer and Mohamedsidiq Hussein.

Quickness and defensive pressure remain hallmarks of the Blue Devils’ philosophy. Lewiston will be a much smaller team across the board this season, so team rebounding is a key. The Devils need to minimize turnovers and take advantage of their opportunities in transition.

With the split of the old Class A school essentially blending the SMAA and KVAC schedules, Lewiston looks forward to the challenge of new opponents with a new cast of characters.
