AUBURN — Margaret Mercedes DelMonaco, 88, died peacefully on Tuesday, Dec. 1, at the Androscoggin Hospice House surrounded by her loving family.
She was born in Bangor on Dec. 30, 1926, to James and Annie Maher.
She attended schools in Milltown, N.B. In 1947, she received her nursing degree from St. Mary’s School of Nursing in Lewiston, as a member of the nurse cadet corps. She worked as an operating room nurse in the Calais and St. Stephen hospitals, along with private-duty nursing.
Margaret was a communicant of the Immaculate Conception Church, holding many positions in its Catholic Women’s Sodality. After her children were grown, Margaret’s passion for golf obtained her a lifetime membership in the St. Croix Country Club, where she golfed until she was 85 years of age. She also enjoyed participating in bridge parties, reading and knitting — crafting many treasured items for her family.
Margaret is survived by her husband of 66 years, Edmund Sr.; their children, Anne Louise James and her husband, Tom, and their children, Christina, Matthew (Kylie) and Christopher James; Edmund Jr.’s wife and their children, Amanda (John) Bell, Melinda and Meagan DelMonaco; Mary Beth Deane and her husband, Bob, and their children, Dr. Courtenay (Dr. Andrew Loveitt) and Hillary Deane; eight great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; sister, Mary Biddescombe; a very special sister-in-law, Irva Maher; and dear friend, Eleanor Clark.
She was predeceased by her parents, James and Annie; brothers James, John and Gerald Maher; and son, Edmund Jr.
