SALEM — Dan Luce ignited a 23-14 run in the fourth quarter as Mt. Abram pulled away to record a 51-45 victory over Carrabec in an opening-day MVC boys’ basketball tilt Friday.

Luce scored 15 of his game-high 25 points in that key fourth frame. Trevor Chaput chipped in for the Roadrunners (1-0) with nine points in what was essentially a two-man attack.

The Cobras (0-1) were paced by Dylan Willette with 13 points, including a pair of shots from beyond the arc. Alex Stafford chipped in with 10 points, the only other player in double figures.

Mt. Ararat 47, Leavitt 43

TURNER — Junior center Matt LaFountain drained a team-leading 15 points as Mt. Ararat edged Leavitt 47-43 in KVAC boys’ basketball action Friday evening.

The Eagles (1-0) jumped out to a seven-point lead, 21-14, in the first quarter. Senior point guard Shy Ulrickson produced 12 points, inlcuding four free throws in the last minutes to push Mt. Ararat to victory.

Junior guard Eli Calder scored a game-high 18 points for the Hornets (0-1). Junior center D’Andre James notched a double-double with 15 points and 14 rebounds for Leavitt.

Poland 56, Freeport 54

FREEPORT — Senior forward John Fossett tossed a game-leading 18 points to nudge Poland to a 56-54 victory over Freeport in WMC boys’ basketball action Friday evening.

The Knights (1-0) started off slow, but picked up the tempo in the second quarter for a 32-28 halftime lead. Senior guard Pat Kuklinski chipped in with 10 points.

Down by 10 late in the game, the Falcons (0-1) went on a 7-0 run. But Freeport failed to make up the deficit.

Madison 62, Telstar 42

Madison — Chase Malloy had a game-high 17 points to lead the Madison Bulldogs to the 62-42 victory over the Telstar Rebels.

Mitch Gervais and Ty Greene each had 10 points in the victory as the Bulldogs earned their first victory of the season. Gervais also had eight rebounds, while Greene collected seven off the glass.

The Rebels (0-1) were paced by Jarrett Bean, who had 13 points, while teammate Avry Griffin had 10 points.

Girls’ basketball

Richmond 42, Rangeley 40 (OT)

RANGELEY — Sydney Tilton netted a pair of key baskets late in overtime as Richmond edged Rangeley 42-40 in a season-opening girls’ basketball tilt Friday.

Tilton finished with 18 points to lead the Bobcats (1-0), while Ashley Abbot chipped in with nine points and Makenzie Abbot added seven.

The Lakers (0-1) were paced by Blayke Morin with 13 points and eight rebounds, while Sydney Royce also netted 13 points.

Madison 77, Telstar 10

MADISON — Kayla Bess led a group of four players in double figures Friday as Madison easily overpowered Telstar 77-10 in more season-opening girls’ basketball action.

Bess led the Bulldogs (1-0) with 19 points, while Madeline Wood chipped in with 12. Sydney LeBlanc and Lauren Hay also contributed with 10 points each in a well-balanced attack.

The Rebels (0-1) were paced by Becca Howard with five points, while Hayley Pete added four.

Hall-Dale 41, Winthrop 29

WINTHROP — Dani Sweet sparked a 14-6 run in the third quarter as Hall-Dale raced away to post a 41-29 victory over Winthrop on Friday.

Sweet netted four of her 13-point total in that key third frame, while sister Thea Sweet chipped in for the Bulldogs (1-0) with 12.

The Ramblers (0-1) were paced by Bri McClure with a 12-point performance, while Shie Smith added seven points.

Poland 55, Freeport 45

POLAND — Nathalie Theriault recorded a triple double Friday evening to lead Poland to a 55-45 victory over Freeport in a WMC girls’ basketball matchup.

Theriault led the Knights (1-0) with 20 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists. Morgan Brousseau chipped in with seven points and 11 rebounds in a rock-solid effort.

The Knights jumped out to a 21-10 advantage in the first frame and were never challenged.

Girls’ hockey

Lewiston/Monm/Oak Hill 5, Mt. Ararat/Morse 0

LEWISTON — Senior center Corinne Laberge scored a hat trick as Lewiston-Monmouth-Oak Hill cruised to a 5-0 shutout over Mt. Ararat-Morse in girls’ ice hockey action Friday evening.

The Devils (4-1) scored four unanswered goals in the second period. Freshman Bree Bergeron contributed a goal and two assists for the Devils.

Goalie Sydney McLure made an impressive 40 saves for the Eagles (1-4), while goalie Meagan Gosselin stopped 12 to earn the shutout for Lewiston-Monmouth-Oak HIll.

Boys’ hockey

Mt. Ararat/Lisbon/Morse 5, Massabesic/OOB/Bonny Eagle 3

BRUNSWICK — Mt. Ararat/Lisbon/Morse Eagles boys’ hockey team scored four times in the third period in the 5-3 victory over the Massabesic/OOB/Bonny Eagle Mob.

Noah Austin scored his first two career-high school goals to lead the Eagles, while Tyler Lacascio had a goal and an assist. Tyler Halls had the game-winning goal and Austin Fournier scored the tying goal.

Parker Lacey had 16 saves in the victory, while Kyle McKay made 31 saves in the loss.

Tyler Ouellette had a pair of goals and Tanner McClure also had a goal.

Junior hockey

New England 4, L/A 2

TYNGSBORO, Mass. — Kyle Weiss scored two goals to lead the New England Stars over the L/A Fighting Spirit in NA3EHL action Friday night at the Skate 3 Arena.

Jake Latham had a goal and an assist in the victory, while Brian Glover had two assists. Steve Crocker added an empty-net goal.

The Fighting Spirit’s goals came from Brett Bittner and Mike Heffernan.
