LEWISTON — A man was injured Friday night, struck by a car as he crossed Lincoln Street in front of Rails restaurant.

Police said Michael Ruby, 20, suffered a variety of injuries but none that were believed to be life-threatening. He was still being evaluated later Friday at Central Maine Medical Center.

Witnesses told police it appeared that Ruby stepped out into traffic where he was struck by a car driven by Anita Hamel, 75, of Sabattus. Police said darkness and heavy fog may have contributed to the crash.

The accident occurred just before 5 p.m. Friday and shut down Lincoln Street for about half an hour while emergency personnel cared for Ruby.

Lewiston Police Sgt. Danny Lachance said the driver told police the pedestrian stepped in front of her car and she did not have a chance to see him. The front windshield of her blue Toyota Camry was smashed in the wreck, although she was not injured.

A witness said she didn’t see the collision, but turned in time to see the car drive over the man’s legs.
